    About the course

    Aim

The course gives basic knowledge in the analysis and design of control systems. This means that students will be expected to be able to do the following after completing this course:

    • Analyze models of dynamical systems in the form of differential equations and transfer functions, describe basic properties of feedback control, and design and analyze control systems with basic controllers.
    • Analyze control systems and models of general dynamic systems in the frequency domain.
    • Analyze and design control systems using state-space methods.
    • Model, design and verify a control system for a laboratory process.

    Content

    • Differential equations, transfer functions, poles and zeros
    • Stability, specifications, relationships between dynamical properties and pole location
    • The feedback principle, block diagrams, feed-forward
    • The PID controller, its structure and function, algorithmization
    • Interpretation of system properties using root loci
    • The importance of control technology for effective management of environmental impact as well as energy and resource use in different types of technical systems
    • Frequency function, Bode plots, phase- and amplitude gain margin
    • Connection between frequency function and time response
    • Time delays
    • Fundamental limitations in feedback, robustness criteria
    • State-space models, stability, controllability and observability
    • State-feedback
    • Observers, feedback from estimated states
    • Reinforcement learning
