    About the course

    Aim

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

    • Select appropriate technologies for the description and structure of digital media content, its visual appearance, and interactive behavior on the web.
    • Classify and describe, both conceptually and technologically, the architecture, components, and communication standards of the Internet that are relevant within the context of digital media presentation on the web.
    • Identify opportunities and risks associated with the use of digital media and (generative) artificial intelligence on the web.
    • Implement client-server/database systems using state-of-the-art web technologies.
    • Differentiate and utilize data structures and formats for information processing and dynamic presentation on the web.
    • Make well-grounded choices for the design and development of distributed web systems across various data contexts.

    Content

The course provides an introduction to the theoretical and practical foundations of programming for on the web. The following topics will be covered:

    • Markup and style sheet languages for the effective structure and design of digital media for display on the web.
    • Scripting languages for the implementation of dynamic behavior when displaying and interacting with digital media on the web.
    • Client-Server Model and Communication Loop as architecture concepts of distributed systems/services, including client-side and server-side programming using scripting languages.
    • Brief introduction to databases, including their application as persistent storage and for dynamic information retrieval.
    • Considerations for web programming, including best practices, ethical considerations, usability and user experience, (generative) artificial intelligence, accessibility, as well as social and economic aspects regarding the use of digital media on the web.
