About the course
Aim
The aim of the course is to give the students’ knowledge within structural mechanics and strength of materials as a basis for abilities within structural design. For areas included in the course, the students should be able to:
- Explain and use terms such as normal and shearing force, bending and torsion moment, stress, strain, elongation, deflection.
- Describe various elements of structure and types of structures and explain modes of action.
- Calculate external and sectional entities as well as deflections for combinations of standard cases and combinations of these.
- Calculate stresses for typical loads and simple elements of structure.
Content
- Basic statics, free body diagrams
- Statically determinate trusses
- Normal stress, normal strain and material models
- Statically indeterminate trusses
- Shear stress, shear strain and material models
- Torsion of shafts
- Cross-sectional forces and bending moments in beams, NVM diagrams
- Normal streses in beams
