About the course

Aim

This course in advanced mate¬rial mechanics aims at the understanding and computational use of materials that are elastically anisotropic, flow plastically or show creep behaviour. After the course the students will be able to:

  • understand and handle multiaxial stress and deformation states,
  • understand time-independent elastoplastic, time-dependent creep material behaviour and continuum damage mechanics, and explain simple manual elastoplastic analyses in a ‘conceptual-design’ context,
  • perform elastoplastic, creep and damage mechanics analyses in a modern FEM environment and understand the particular computational implications and difficulties inherent in such analyses, and
  • implement simple material models and understand the effect of the tanget stiffness regarding computational efficiency.

Content

Continuum mechanical basis Plasticity Viscoplasticity/creep Continuum damage mechanics Material modelling Computational aspcts

Computational assignments:

  • Plasticity; analysis of bending specimen
  • Creep; analysis of test specimen
  • Damage; analysis of tensile test
  • Material modelling; implementation of cyclic behaviour
  • Computational efficiency; tangent stiffness evaluation
