About the course
Aim
After the course, students shall be able to:
- Use existing conventions and follow established processes to contribute through software to an open source project.
- Present changes and updates so external parties may approve submissions.
- Create a time plan and monitor progress through a common development project
- Use appropriate tools for contemporary, large-scale software development
- Independently acquire new knowledge and skills in order to contribute to a large-scale software project.
Content
The course is based on development in a large open source project to which the students contribute. The students plan and perform their own contributions to the project, and also support each others efforts.
The students are given the opportunity to focus their work in one of two directions. The first direction is on large scale projects, which puts high demands on the development process, communication with the project and planning. This direction is based on the profile Large Scale Software Engineering. The other direction is on algorithm development where the code contribution should be more advanced. This is often possible only in medium-sized projects. This direction build on the profile Programming and Algorithms. Both directions in the course requires planning, cooperation and non-trivial code contributions.
