About the course
Aim
After the course, the student will be able to:
- Understand and apply basic concepts of object-oriented programming.
- Understand and apply different aspects of data types and type hierarchies in both object-oriented and non-object-oriented languages.
- Implement object-oriented programs in Java.
- Implement simple graphical interfaces with event processing.
Content
- The programming language Java, and major differences compared to Python.
- Object-oriented programming in general and in Java in particular. Objects, classes, instance variables, methods, inheritance, polymorphism.
- Fundamental programming concepts that occur in several object-oriented languages. Manifest typing, static type checking, type conversion, enumerable types. Pointers and references. Identity and equality. Variable lifetime. Organisation and name spaces. Error handling with exceptions. Text handling and character encoding. Generic programming.
- Design principles, e.g., the use of polymorphism, inheritance vs. delegation.
- The core class libraries in Java, including programming of simple GUIs.
