About the course

Aim

The course is about learning the principles and programming techniques for advanced graphical user interfaces. We refer to this as interaction programming.

Objectives for Knowledge and Understanding:

  • Describe the architecture of an event-based window system with graphical components (widgets).
  • Describe different design principles for graphical user interfaces
  • Explain how interaction programming is a part of the development of usability of systems and applications.

Goals for Skill and Ability:

  • Use a current programming language and class library for interaction programming, such as Flutter, React-Native, and Kotlin.
  • Create custom components (widgets) as an extension of an existing class library.
  • Program dynamic interaction techniques.
  • Apply design patterns for interaction techniques.
  • Work with interaction programming in the context of usability problems.

Goals for Judgment and Attitude:

  • Explain the connection between class libraries for interaction programming and principles for user interface design.

Content

  • Architecture for event-based window systems with widgets.
  • Design patterns for interaction programming (eg MVC, Observer, Command, Decorator).
  • Class library for graphical user interfaces.
  • Programming of own widgets for platforms such as android or iOS
  • Redesign and implementation of graphical user interfaces based on known usability issues.
  • Interaction programming and design principles for graphical user interfaces, e.g. how class libraries can support conventions and interaction paradigms.
