About the course
Aim
The course aim is to introduce the interdisciplinary field of biomedical engineering. The student should be able to identify and explain aspects of technology in diagnostics and therapeutics. After passing the course the student should be able to:
- apply and use biomedical engineering terminology
- explain how the important functions of the human body are studied using quantitative methods and principles of engineering
- perform computations on physiological and biomedical engineering problems
- apply a cumulative knowledge of biomedical engineering on the medical problems and questions
Content
The course includes the following themes: Theme 1. Introduction: terminology, life and death and health care process. Theme 2. Biopotentials: origin and measurement methods. Theme 3. Circulation, respiration and metabolism. Theme 4. Medical imaging systems: radiation physics, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and nuclear medicine. Theme 5. Medical informatics: healthcare system, medical data record, decision making and telemedicine. Theme 6. Biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering and technology in the operating room. Theme 7.
