About the course
Aim
The aim of the course is to provide a basic knowledge of physics, adapted for continued university studies within the areas of technology and natural science. The course provides qualifications equivalent to “Fysik 2”. After the course, the student should be able to:
- Solve problems and explain phenomena in the areas mechanics, electromagnetism, wave theory and modern physics.
- Use physical concepts and models in a mathematical form, and calculate physical quantities.
- Perform physical experiments and analyze the results.
Content
Mechanics: Torque. Equilibrium. Two dimensional motion, circular central motion.Projectile motion. Simulation of two dimensional motion with a simple numerical method.
- Wave theory: Harmonic motion. Hooke´s law,spring-mass system, pendulum.Period,frequency.Wave motion, wavelength, propagation speed.Superposition.Standing waves and resonance.Sound waves. Light and electromagnetic waves. Geometrical optics.Reflection and refraction.Interference in double slits , lattices and thin films. Orientation about sounfd level and the Doppler effect. Orientation about wave phenomena and applications in everyday life and technology.
- Electromagnetism: Magentic materials. Magnetic field around and force on current carrying conductors. Motion of charged particles in electric and magnetic fields.Law of induction. Len law. Orientation about technical applications such as the AC generator and the transformer.
- Modern physics: Black body radiation. The photoelectric effect, photons. The wave particle duality. Wave properties of matter, de Broglie wavelength. Electronic structure of the atom, absor5ption and emission spectra. Orientation about applications in technology. Orientation about some areas in astrophysics,e g different methods of investigating the Universe, electromagnetic radiation from outer space, the development of stars and the Universe.
