About the course
Aim
This course covers areas within physical chemistry that provide the necessary knowledge to master more advanced courses in materials science.
Upon completing the course, students should be able to:
- explain quantum mechanical principles and their role in describing atomic and molecular structures, by proper mathematical treatment.
- explain how chemical structure affects electronic structure, vibrational and rotational energies, as well as the electrical and optical properties of molecules, by proper mathematical treatment.
Content
Overview of physical chemistry and its relevance to materials science, including fundamental concepts and definitions. Principles of quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular structure, quantum mechanical models of chemical bonding, and electronic structure—from bonds to energy bands. Topics also include insulators, semiconductors, and metals, as well as chemical potential, reduction and oxidation, charge carriers, excitations, and molecular spectra.
