About the course
Aim
The course provides knowledge of fundamental principles of microwave technology. The course deepens knowledge in RF electronics while introducing new microwave circuits and systems, e.g. waveguides and radar systems. After completing the course, students should be able to design and simulate different microwave circuits with a professional EDA tool, Advanced Design System (ADS).
After passing the course, a student should be able to:
- analyze transmission lines and microwave circuits using the Smith chart and S-parameters
- calculate characteristic parameters for waveguides in different modes, namely TEM, TE, and TM, as well as plane waves in different media
- analyze fundamental passive and active microwave circuits, e.g. couplers, filters, amplifiers, and Doppler radar
- use ADS for microwave circuit design and simulation at both schematic and layout levels
- design and simulate both passive and active microwave circuits, e.g. microwave patch antennas, power dividers, couplers, and amplifiers, using ADS
- design and simulate impedance matching networks for narrowband or broadband circuit design, using ADS
Content
Electromagnetic theory, transmission line theory, transmission lines and waveguides, impedance matching and tuning, microwave resonators, power dividers and couplers, microwave oscillators and frequency multipliers, radar and radiometer systems.
