About the course
Aim
After completing the course, students should be able to:
- analyze various analog modulation techniques
- analyze various digital modulation techniques
- analyze architectures for heterodyne or homodyne radio transmitters and receivers
- analyze RF signals in the time domain with an oscilloscope and in the frequency domain with a spectrum analyzer
- perform measurements on RF circuits with a spectrum analyzer
- design and simulate RF amplifiers using Advanced Design System (ADS)
- design and simulate RF transmitters/receivers using ADS
Content
Period 1 (lectures + laboratory work): Introduction to communication electronics, general signal transmission theory, communication network, overview receiver/transmitter architectures, noise in RF-systems, modulation techniques, analog and digital modulation, baseband and bandpass signals, introduction to antenna theory, RF-circuits, design of RF-circuits and systems. RF-specific design approach based on S-parameters, stability analysis, matching networks.
Period 2 (project work): RF circuit, RF system design. Under the project work, there is a possibility to manufacture the RF-circuits as RF-modules and then, to evaluate their performance through mesurements.
