About the course
Aim
The course aims to give basic theoretical and practical knowledge on numerical analysis of fluid flow problems. After the course, the student should be able to:
- Understand the main concept of numerically solving simpler fluid flow problems using the finite volume method and explain the underlying theoretical assumptions
- Perform reliable CFD analysis of simpler engineering fluid flow problems by adopting model verification and validation procedures
- Understand the main concept of RANS turbulence modelling, including underlying assumptions and factors that may affect the model's performance under various flow conditions
- Identify and analyze relevant CFD results using different post-processing techniques, and compare results against relevant theory and open literature with a critical mindset
- Present the work in a clear, informative and scientific way
Content
The course will address the basics in fluid mechanics (dynamics) and its governing equations, similarity, problem formulations and overview of numerical methods (discretization and the finite volume method, boundary conditions, etc.). Aspects in general CFD practice, introduction to turbulence modelling/models (RANS models), and report writing will be given.
