About the course
Aim
The course covers two important types of engineering materials for lightweight applications, namely light alloys and high strength steels. A comprehensive overview will be given of these two types of materials, to provide the students with good knowledge about the relationship between composition, processing, microstructure and mechanical properties. After the course, the student shall have a solid knowledge and understanding within the area of light alloys and high strength steels for advanced applications, their physical metallurgy, processing and mechanical properties. Finally, after the course, the students should be able to:
- explain the relationship between composition, processing, microstructure and mechanical properties of light alloys and high strength steels.
- analyze and explain the use of light alloys and high strength steels in lightweight applications.
- evaluate and apply knowledge about the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties in relation to relevant hardening mechanisms to plan, implement and evaluate a material engineering problem.
Content
Light alloys and their processing. Structure and properties of aluminium alloys, magnesium alloys and titanium alloys. Alloys for casting and forging. Different high strength steels and their processing. Structure and properties of different high strength steels. The relationship of mechnical properties and heat treatment of light alloys and high strength steels.
