      About the course

      Aim

The course is an in-depth study in materials science from a product design perspective and is intended to give advanced knowledge and skills concerning the influence of the choice of material on the functional performance and environmental impact of physical products. After completing the course, the student will be able to

      • Make and motivate design choices of physical product, notably material, manufacturing process and geometry, using mathematical optimization theory and material test data with the aim of minimizing the environmental impact while meeting design requirements.
      • Evaluate and reflect on how design choices relate to the environmental impact of a product

      Content

Basic theories for optimization of materials selection with regard to sustainable development. Systematic materials selection and methods to handle optimization of several variables. Projects in systematic and sustainable materials selection where recycling and reuse, and materials semantics should be treated.
