About the course
Aim
1. Understanding of Airborne Transport Vehicles and Their Design:
- The student should be able to describe the fundamental needs, impacts, and characteristics of vehicles in transport systems, with a particular focus on aeroplanes, and understand the factors that influence configuration choices and the design of an aeroplane.
2. Basic Principles and Calculations:
- The student should be able to explain, apply, and perform calculations on basic principles within configuration, aerodynamics, weight, and propulsion of airborne vehicles, as well as perform basic performance calculations for aeroplanes, including estimations of lift, drag, propulsion, and stability.
3. Design Studies and Performance Analysis:
- The student should be able to initiate their own design studies and perform performance analysis of existing aeroplanes, with an understanding of different aeroplane configurations and their specific characteristics.
Content
The course aims to provide an introduction to the field of aircraft and vehicle construction. Furthermore, the course intends to give basic knowledge and understanding of the factors that govern configuration choices and the sizing of an aircraft. The main content covers the following topics:
- Lift and how lift is produced
- Drag and drag calculations
- Propulsion: different ways of producing thrust
- Performance and performance calculations
- Stability and control
- Different aircraft configurations and why they look the way they do
- Basics on aircraft dimensioning
