About the course
Aim
After completing the course, the student should, primarily from a scientific and technical systems perspective, be able to:
• Describe the environmental challenges covered in the course, their causes, significant environmental and health effects, and how they can be mitigated.• Provide a general overview of the historical development of environmental challenges up to the present day and explain how potential future scenarios may impact the possibility of achieving sustainable development.• Describe how the technical systems covered in the course affect the environment and, based on the knowledge acquired, explain how they can be adapted to reduce their environmental impacts.• Explain key aspects of modern environmental work within companies and organizations.• Apply the above environmental knowledge to solve real-world challenges and discuss social sustainability in relation to these real-world challenges.
Content
The course focuses on the engineer’s role in relation to the environment and sustainable development, including issues such as the origins of environmental problems, the connection between environmental issues and technical systems, and life-cycle and systems perspectives. The course consists of lectures and a course textbook that complement each other and are intended to introduce fundamental knowledge about environmental issues and environmental engineering. Parts of the course content are examined through a digital on-campus examination (DIT). Throughout the course, various assignments and seminars are also carried out, both in groups and individually, which are examined in UPG. In these assignments and seminars, environmental engineering knowledge is applied through different activities, such as debates and games. The group work also includes planning, compilation, analysis, and presentation.
