About the course
Aim
The purpose of this course is to provide basic knowledge of the physics of waves with a focus on electromagnetic waves. After completing the course the student should be able to:
- use basic wave concepts and mathematically describe waves
- solve problems and perform derivations that involve electromagnetic waves
- present solutions and derivations in a well structured and logically coherent way
- simulate elektromagnetic waves by computer calculations.
Content
Mathematical description of waves, the wave equation, superposition and harmonic waves.. Waves as solutions to Maxwell's equations. Polarization Electromagnetic waves in vacuum and materia. The Poyntingvector. Reflection. Discretization and implementation of Maxwell's equations for computer calculations.
