About the course
Aim
The purpose of the course is to provide basic knowledge in electromagnetism and develop the ability to apply vector analysis and numerical methods in physics. This implies that the student should:
- be able to formulate and apply electromagnetic theory in differential and integral form
- use basic electromagnetic concepts and relationships to formulate a model of a physical system
- solve problems in electromagnetism
- use numerical simulations to solve and analyze problems in electrostatics
Content
The course is based on Maxwell’s equations as the classical basic postulates of electromagnetism. These are formulated and used in both differential and integral form in derivations and problem solving. Subareas in the course are:
- Electrostatics: Electric Field Intensity, Coulomb’s law, Potential, Gauss’s law, Poisson’s and Laplace’s Equations, Capacitance, Dielectrics, Electric Dipole, Polarization, Electrostatic Energy and Forces, Method of Images.
- Steady Electric Currents: Current Density, Equation of Continuity, Resistance, Joule’s law.
- Magnetostatics: Magnetic Flux Density, Biot-Savart law, Ampere’s Circuital law, Vector Magnetic Potential, Magnetic Materials, Magnetic Circuits, Magnetic Dipole, Magnetization, Magnetostatic Energy and Forces, Motion of Charged Particles in Electromagnetic Fields.
- Time-Varying Electromagnetic Fields: Induction, Faraday’s law, Inductance, Electromotive Force, Displacement Current Density.
Numerical simulation of problems in electrostatics.
