About the course
Aim
The aim of the course is knowledge of key concepts and practical skills in applying methods of advanced quantum mechanics. After completing the course students should be able to:
- solve problems by using different quantum-mechanical representations to describe a system’s time evolution, and use the density matrix for mixed states,
- apply methods of scattering theory and time-dependent perturbation theory,
- apply second quantisation to many-particle systems and quantize the electromagnetic fields,
- solve problems in relativistic quantum mechanics,
- summarise and present a specialized topic in advanced quantum mechanics.
Content
The evolution operator. Schrödinger, Heisenberg and Dirac pictures. Time-dependent perturbation theory. Fermi's golden rule. Density matrix. Pure and mixed states. Second quantisation. Scattering theory. Quantisation of electromagnetic field and the concept of photons. Interaction of matter with light, absorption and emission. Relativistic quantum mechanics: Pauli, Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations. Dirac Hartree-Fock and density functional theory.
