About the course
Aim
The aim with the course is to give the students an elementary and solid introduction to the standard model of elementary particles and forces. Besides the phenomenological treatment of elementary particles quantum field theory will be introduced. The approach will be extended with an outlook to discuss many-body physics in condensed matter. After a successful course the student can
- solve problems using relativistic four vector formalism in elementary particle physics and, in general, in many-body physics
- apply group theory to derive elementary particles based on isospin, SU(3), SU(4), SU(5) symmetry and so called gauge invariance
- solve problems in second quantization and calculate propagators
- apply perturbation theory of quantum fields and calculate Feynman diagrams
Content
Phenomenological introduction to subatomic physics and the standard model of elementary particles. Classical and quantum field theory and to the need of quantum fields. The role of external and internal symmetry; the Noether theorem, isospin, SU(3), SU(4), SU(5) groups. Cannonical quantization of fields. Electromagnetism and gauge fields. Discrete symmetry transformations; CPT theorem. S-matrix and perturbation theory. Wick’s theorem. Renormalization and quasiparticles. Yang-Mills theory, the Weinberg-Salam model and the Higgs field.
