        About the course

        Aim

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to electromagnetism. After successful examination the student should be able to …

        I. ...reproduce, explain, analyze, and use physical concepts, relations, and methods related to electrostatics.

II. ...reproduce, explain, analyze, and use physical concepts, relations, and methods related to magnetostatics.

III. ...reproduce, explain, analyze, and use physical concepts, relations, and methods related to time-varying electromagnetic fields.

IV. ...reproduce, explain, analyze, and use physical concepts, relations, and methods related to electromagnetism on differential form.

        Content

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to electromagnetism and the role it has in applications of technical relevance. Several electromagnetic applications related to medical technology are addressed.

The course consist of four parts (I-IV) with subheadings according to,I. Electrostatics: -Charge and current, -Coulomb's law, -Gauss' law for electric fields, -Electric potential, -Metallic and dielectric materials.II. Magnetostatics: -Biot-Savart's law, -Gauss' law for magnetic fields, -Ampere's law, -Magnetic materials.III. Time-varying electromagnetic fields: -Induction, -Electromagnetic waves, -Transmission.IV. Electromagnetism on differential form: -Constitutive relations, -Gradient, -Divergence, -Rotation/Curl.

In the course many concepts are covered including:Maxwell's equations, electric charge, electric field, Coulomb's law, electric potential, Gauss's law, current, current density, resistivity, the continuity equation. magnetic flux density, Biot-Savart's law, Ampere's law, magnetic flux, magnetic vector potential, conductors, capacitance, dielectrics, electric dipoles, polarization, magnetic dipoles, magnetic moment, magnetization, magnetic circuits, electromagnetic boundary conditions, electromagnetic induction, quasi-stationary electromagnetic fields, Faraday's law, inductance, electromagnetic waves, reflection, refraction, polarization, Poisson's equation, Laplace's equation, and the method of images.
