About the course
Aim
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of materials science with a focus on applications in biotechnology and biomedicine. Topics covered include material classification (metals, polymers, composite and hybrid materials, ceramics, and bioderived materials), material properties (thermal, optical, magnetic, and mechanical), and the relationship between material structure and properties. Experimental techniques for material processing and characterization will be discussed, as well as the environmental impact of different materials and their role in sustainable development. Additionally, the course introduces the use and requirements of materials for biotechnological and biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering and medical devices.
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- Describe different material types (metals, polymers, composites, ceramics, and bioderived materials) as well as their properties and applications.
- Analyze the relationships between material structure and properties, including mechanical, thermal, optical, and magnetic properties, and assess their relevance for different applications.
- Describe techniques for material processing and characterization.
- Reflect on the role of materials in sustainable development and evaluate the environmental and societal impacts of different material choices.
