      About the course

      Aim

The course will give the student a basic chemical understanding of how the structure of a molecule renders them different properties which in turn affects environment within the biosphere, the hydrosphere, and the atmosphere. After the course, the student is expected to be able to:

      • describe the chemical processes that have caused and are causing the major environmental problems of our time
      • discuss the effect of chemicals on plants- and animal life and on health and environment
      • reflect on ethical dilemmas in environmental chemical questions

      Content

The changes of the ozone layer, air pollution, the greenhouse effect and global warming, the toxicity of organic substances and heavy metals, pollution and purification of natural waters, waste management, biological and chemical degradation, sustainable development and environmental legislation. An in-depth study project presented during a seminar.
