The course will give the student a chemical understanding of the causes and consequences of the effect of the global effect of different chemicals on our environment within the biosphere, the hydrosphere and the atmosphere. After the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- explain the chemical processes that have caused and are causing the major environmental problems of our time
- judge and predict the effect of chemicals on plants- and animal life and on health and environment
- reflect on ethical dilemmas in environmental chemical questions.
Content
The changes of the ozone layer, air pollution, the green house effect and global warming, sources of energy and the consequences on the environment, the toxicity of organic substances and heavy metals, pollution and purification of natural waters waste management, biological and chemical degradation, sustainable development and environmental legislation. An in-depth study project presented during a seminar.
