About the course
Aim
The course aims to provide a thorough introduction to computer networks, internet protocols and distributed systems. After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- describe and explain typical network architecture, network layers, and encapsulation, as well as important protocols and functions within the four upper network layers (application, transport, network and link layers).
- describe, explain, and analyze the functioning and protocol formats of the most important protocols on the internet: HTTP, TCP and IP.
- describe and explain what a distributed system is from different perspectives, including design goals and simple implementations.
- use tools to collect, analyze and explain how protocols behave based on logs of internet traffic.
Content
Network architecture and principles of protocol design. Network layer and encapsulation. Important protocols and functions at: the application layer: e.g. HTTP, HTTPS and DNS; the transport layer: TCP and UDP, congestion and flow control; the network layer: IP, routing, protocols and algorithms for routing; the link layer: e.g. Ethernet and collision management. Principles and protocols for wireless communication (WiFi and mobile networks). Introduction to security in computer networks. Fundamentals of distributed systems. Design goals for distributed systems including sharing, transparency, openness and scalability. Perspectives on distributed systems, such as architecture, processes, communication, coordination, naming, consistency, replication and fault tolerance.
