About the course
Aim
The aim of this course is to give a thorough introduction to the practical issues underlying the design and implementation of modern biological database systems that are used in bioinformatics research. Further, basic concepts in database security are introduced.
After the completion of the course you should be able to:
- Design relational databases for different types of example domains by first creating a conceptual scheme using the EER model and then translating this scheme into a corresponding logical schema captured in the relational data model.
- Employ the SQL language to query and to modify relational databases, as well as to create such a database with a given relational database scheme.
- Explain and use the terminology and the main principles of information security.
- Apply relevant information security modeling techniques.
Content
General database management systems (DBMS). Methods for data modelling and database design (EER modeling). Database language (SQL). Security considerations of databases as a part of a larger system. Security modeling techniques. Approaches to database security (DB access control, DB encryption, DB privacy).
