About the course

Aim

This course intends to provide an introduction to mathematical modelling of random experiments and statistical theory/methodology. The course also illustrates applications, in particular within the fields of engineering and science. After completing the course the student should be able to:

  • M1 (Modelling): identify questions where random factors can affect the result, explain basic probability theoretical concepts, e.g. random variables, probability function, density function and distribution function, set up relevant probability theoretical models for simple random experiments
  • M2 (Theory and Method): use the basic concepts and theorems to calculate important quantities in probability-theoretic models, e.g. probabilities and expected values, explain basic concepts and methods in statistical theory, such as point estimates, confidence intervals and tests, choose appropriate statistical analysis methods and apply these to simple probability-theoretic models constructed from observed data
  • M3 (Accounting): argue for their approaches using relevant concepts within the course, and report clear calculations and reasoning.
  • M4 (Software): MATLAB
