    About the course

    Aim

The course deals with chemistry applications at an advanced level based on a molecular-centric perspective: how are the structures and properties of molecules related to their field of application. The course aims at giving the student in-depth knowledge in different areas where specific molecules and materials can be applied with a special focus on molecules and techniques that can be used for new materials for future energy, biomaterials, diagnostics and drugs, as well as analysis methods from a forensic perspective. The fields of application will also be discussed from a green chemistry perspective focusing on atom economy, sustainability and recycling. The process of moving from a molecular idea into a commercial application will also be addressed. Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to:

    • Understand principles for development/design of new molecules and materials for different applications
    • Know about important molecules/materials and their application in selected areas
    • Analyze specific requirements for different molecules/material from a structure/function perspective to application
    • Describe applied chemistry from a molecular-centered perspective
    • Understand the principles of how a molecular idea can be developed into a commercial application
    • Discuss applied chemistry from a green chemistry perspective.

    Content

A holistic view of the steps and processes that are required from the discovery of molecules/materials with specific functions towards the development of a chemical application in academia or industry.
