About the course
Aim
The course aims to provide basic theoretical, laboratory and instrumental knowledge in atomic and molecular spectrometry and electroanalytical chemistry.
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- explain basic terms and concepts in spectrometry and electroanalytical chemistry.
- describe the principle and structure of instruments and equipment used in spectrometry and electroanalytical chemistry.
- explain the chemical principle of spectrometric and electrochemical analysis methods.
- interpret and qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate data obtained in spectrometry and electroanalytical chemistry. Plan, carry out and evaluate measurements where spectrometry and electrochemical analysis methods are used, and compile the results in a laboratory report.
Content
Molecular UV/VIS spectrometry: absorption and luminescence. Atomic absorption and emission spectrometry (AAS and ICP techniques). Mass spectrometry. Electroanalytical chemistry: fundamentals of electrochemistry, ion-selective electrodes and potentiometry, coulometry, voltammetry. Potentiometric titration. Calibration methods. The course also addresses sustainable development; students learn to (i) use important methods for environmental analysis, (ii) handle hazardous chemicals, and (iii) collect and manage chemical waste in a correct and sustainable manner.
