      About the course

      Aim

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

      • Give an account of general and species-specific aspects of cognitive mechanisms in animals, and their evolution
      • Apply cognitive theories and learning models
      • Reflect on and discuss different theories of animal intelligence, and to assess the scientific corpus on this topic critically

      Content

The course revolves around three themes: 1) Cognitive mechanisms and behavioural flexibility, 2) Modelling learning and memory, and 3) Evolution of cognition. The these themes cover the following topics:

      • Cognitive mechanisms of animals, including memory, learning and specialized capacities
      • Behaviour systems and flexibility
      • Social learning and culture in animals
      • Evolution of animal intelligence
      • Ethology and animal psychology
      • Computer exercise in modelling learning, memory and behaviour
