        About the course

        Aim

The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge of structure and function of nucleic acids in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The course aims also to provide theoretical and experimental knowledge in gene technology. After completing the course the student will be able to:

        • give an account for the mechanisms at a molecular level of genetics in the course
        • present some applications of genetic engineering
        • show experimental skills in the area of molecular genetics.

        Content

The course treats the functions and structures of nucleic acids. The course also introduces the concepts of transcription, translation, control of gene expression, mutations, DNA repair and DNA recombination as well as genetic engineering. On the course there are laboratory practicals with basic methods in molecular genetics. The seminars focus on how methods in molecular genetics can be applied for the development of a sustainable society, and discuss related ethical aspects.

One of the laboratory practicals on the course is part of the track Qualitative Laboratory Work with Reflection (Kvalitativt Laborativt Arbete med Reflektion, KLA-R). This track is part of the courses with molecular biology labs on the program. On the KLA-R lab you will work independently in the lab, receive feedback on your practical work and be given the opportunity to reflect on your development as a laboratory practitioner.
