About the course
Aim
The aim of the course is to enhance the student’s knowledge of and ability to conduct and present scientific investigations. Having completed the course, the student should be able to:
- Formulate hypotheses and predictions, and choose and motivate a method and design that adequately evaluates a given hypothesis
- Critically examine texts
- Present results from scientific studies
Content
This course focuses on the scientific method of inquiry, from asking questions and formulating hypothesis to reporting the findings of a study. A central concept to understand is the unit of replication, and how to handle variation in biological data. There is a variety of learning activities offered, such as: lectures that introduce important concepts in experimental design, critical thinking, data analysis and how scientific results are presented; seminars where experimental design, text analysis and tools to evaluate quality of scientific literature are discussed and applied; computer labs to practice visualization of scientific results; project work to apply the knowledge gained during the course.
